Following Josh Barton’s post last night, here are a few more pics of our game, my Thracians vs Josh’s Thebans. We used DBMM 200 on a 6’x 4’ table.
The picture of the table shows the tactical situation Josh had created. He refused most of the table - the thin black lines are hoplites and you have some idea of the number of troops I had facing nothing. All three hills were gentle.
At the far end Josh had concentrated cavalry and psiloi to hit that flank before l could reinforce it. Luckily, I had the first bound and was able to get peltasts (Ax(S)) onto the top of the hill. Three time’s the defensive bonus for defending uphill and the plus for being superior is all that saved the peltasts from being doubled as I pushed light horse and psiloi around them to do everything I could to hold the hill.
Holding the hill proved decisive. All of the psiloi supporting the peltasts and one of the light horse were eventually lost but they had protected the peltasts and bought enough time so that my central command could get amongst the Theban psiloi and prevent them out flanking the hill.
The Theban psiloi were eventually broken and that exposed the cavalry involved in the continuing backwards and forwards fight on the hill.
[Edit] No hoplites - not one - were hurt bringing you this game.
