Avars vs Feudal Spanish, posted by Neil Williamson, 1 June 2020

Jim Hoskin and I had a game on Sunday. 400ap of Feuding Spanish v Avar.
The Spanish was made up of kn(f), sp(I), ps(o), ps(I) and a fe w bd and bw.
The Avar were cv(s) lh(s) and bg(f) and 4 kn(f)
Jim defended and I attacked for control of a very important communication route obviously built by the Romans.
Ok it should be a dirt road but this is much more exciting.
The main thrust of the battle was decided in the centre.
Rather than try and force the wooded hill soundly defended by masses of psiloi, I repositioned my light horse to the centre to try and take out the weakest part of the Spanish line in the centre. There were just a few bow and blade in the line here. The knights behind would then probably come and sort me out however.
Jim reacted by bringing all his knights for
forward. This caught me out as so far he had sat largely still in a strong position.
I turned my light horse to run back for the flank. I was hoping I would have room to flee out to the flank if the knights charged.
The knights charged, 16 wide, along the line. They were too far away from the cavalry but easily caught the light horse.
Due to the way Jim organised his attacks 3 of the light horse could not escape and fled through the cavalry and were spent.
The cavalry, having no option, charged the knights, killing 4 for the loss of 1. The Spanish counter charge killed 4 cavalry but the losses were spread evenly over 2 commands. The next Avar attack broke the knights.
The Spanish Spear then engaged the cavalry which ended as just a shoving match with no losses either side.
Avar knights and some spare cavalry moved to the flank to destroy the psiloi and break the Spanish.
21 to 4 victory for the Avar.
Thanks Jim for a great game.

  • Vincent Cholewa Great to see you guys playing. Thank you for the game report. DBMM 200?
  • Neil Williamson No. 400ap on a 4' x 8' table

    • Vincent Cholewa Neil Williamson how did you find using 400AP with the shallower depth of table?
    • Neil Williamson Well it can be a bit restricting. You can quickly get the feeling of "your back against the wall" and it can stop rapid redeployment at the rear.
Terrain placement tends to be closer to the middle.
Deployment in depth is also not possible.

In the main though it is quite satisfactory for a friendly game.
I don't think it has affected any of the games I have played on it to any great extent
I would not recommend it for tournaments though.

The Spanish general El Cid himself
2 craggy Hills, a gentle hill and a wooded hill plus the all important road

The light horse have repositioned to the centre.
The 2 in the foreground forgot the hills were craggy.
The knights come Forward and the light horse decide to get the hell out of Dodge
At the end of the Spanish knight's line 2 light horse hard flank the Knight at the end of the line
And this was the result.
But the surviving light horse was to get his revenge.
The knights and cavalry face off
And they clash. The LH is out for revenge
First round of the clash over. It looks like a gap but there are 2 cv just in picture having been repulsed
The knights reposition
The baggage in the background is hard flanked by psiloi
And they kill the psiloi
Some knights are routing
The broken centre
Knights plugging the exposure on the flank
And they get stuck in
Ready to sweep behind the infantry but the Spanish surrender.
