Your thoughts on Sassanids - asked by Steven Hill, 17 August 2021

Follow-up Purchase Advice

I am thinking about Sassanids for my investment into 28mm (the ranges look so good) but because it is such an investment can the experienced and expert out there send me their take on a decent or dare-I-say “competitive” list please at 450AP so I can work out my purchases? Plus their thoughts.

    So far it looks like investment isn't warranted 😔
    But seriously its a lot of $$ so I do need to know if it can be competitive - it won't be a fun foray into DBMM if I lose every time - and if it can be what is optimum option to start with, given the wide range of allies and troop types available and the long painting time.

    I've just revamped my list.Allies like Huns are good but currently im only using a CinC and 2 subgenerals.4 x Elephants, 6 x Cataphracts, 9 x PsO,6 x AxS,8 x LhF ,15 x HdO and the rest Irr CvS.Not an easy army to use.

    Always good to have a high personal interest in your army and like the figures you are going to paint or buy painted. That can overcome minor or even major issues in an armies playability....unless it's completely average like all my armies.....

    Your decision needs to be about what gives you the most enjoyment. The dice will decide the outcome.
    Putting an army together and painting the figures is pleasurable ,finished off
    with basing and tufting to complement your efforts. 👏
    As any Hutt Club member will tell you the tufting is important 😬

      I agree with Allen. Paint something you love. Plus Sassanids would be relatively easy to paint. Lots of metal for washing. It's also certain you will end up with more than 1 army 🙂 , so don't try to do it all in 1 army. And there are so many nice figures. Plus that - all the roman armies need an opponent!

Mixing my metaphors and allusions, I took a highly experimental Later Polish army to Call to Arms, which saw my first games since January 2. It was sort of a Scribe moment: I hardly rocked the show but my points were "not many if any"! So, I adjusted the hypothesis behind the experiment, tweaked the list, ran an amended experiment at the Winter Cup and was very happy with how it went in my two games. I think the lesson is Illegitimi non carborundum (if Latin-ish is not culturally insensitive to a Persian)!

    so can you say if we applied that experience to my situation of having zero figures, when you adjusted how many additional figures would you have had to outlay and paint as a consequence of the test? I'm not saying I won't buy more of course (we all do) but I've gone through an expensive exercise with GW recently before settling on something.

    Four figures - enough for two elements of Hungarian light horse. I have “an elegant sufficiency” of figures because I like the army, the figures (Perry WotR and Old Glory), and can field some options.

      Steven Hill if you are worried about how you might use Persians is there an army you feel an affinity for? Perhaps Byzantines! 😝

      No I am fine I was just checking that I wasn't going to be in the situation of a lovely but unplayable army with my one real shot at buying and painting from scratch

      Steven Hill I don’t have a Sassanid army but it seems to have a wide range of options including regular or irregular command structure and troops. I don’t know the list well enough to comment on which troops you must, can, can’t have with different options.

      Steven Hill every list works. You just have to play to its strengths. Some armies are more forgiving and have many strengths so less predictable. Others are a bit one lane and less options so harder to take initiative. Generally lists with options give you tweak variations that with only a few extra troops can play a different way

      I want to thank everyone for their advice and contributions. The posting has gone on a bit so I just wanted to say to finish the subject that I have enough info now. I have looked at the possible lists and it is clear I do just have to decide if I would enjoy playing with something like 20 Cv(s) and elephants. I am sure I would enjoy painting them but i have the information to make a call thanks.

I like the Sassanids, it has variations in the list too.I like the earlier irregular version, I may try the later regular one sometime.
