Was trying to figure out how to make shield transfers for the Late Roman archers (none commercially available) and ran across a VERY fiddly way to do so:
I have the advantage of proper graphics software (Corel Draw) so suspect I can improve on the fit to object problem ...

I have made flags by printing onto standard 80gsm paper and gluing it onto the foil from sparking wine bottles.
Shield patterns are more difficult. I have printed onto 80gsm paper then glued them onto shields a trimmed. The trimming is a bit fiddly.

On the painting table - Cataphracts - Kevin O'Kane - 20/02/2021

And cataphracts from the decadent West. Main issue - fixing four to a base. Solved by slight offset between riders. And found the Italeri black wash better than the Citadel equivalent (Nuln Oil). Black wash on horses, brown (earthshade) on riders.

note that the base depth is 50 mm - allows for a bit more leeway and some of the other cavalry won't fit with 40 mm dept
