THAT list, Medieval German - posted by Josh Barton, 18 April 2022

Bit of fun with THAT list (medieval German) - the list does have non-crossbow Bw(I) until 1320 where they're replaced with Irr Hd(O) but has no Ps(S) and the only Bw(O) options are crossbowmen.

It's certainly an entertaining list to try and build an army from!

This is THE list for “if not A then up to 1/2 B and the remainder C but only if imperial, unless it is 1400 to 1405, when a bishop can have one D for each A”.

Josh Barton I admire your courage in taking on the Herculean task of making sense of this list! There is a least one good army in there but which?

the strongest is probably the post 1486 imperial list with tonnes of Reg Ps(S) Pk(O) and Kn(S) double based in wedge

oh and curiously still up to 24 Hd(O) because they have no end date

Josh Barton A Habsburg (Austrian Duchy) army of around 1442 might be amusing. Type is T. You could have 25 later Swiss Pk(S) as an ally. Also war wagons, Cv(O) and/or Cv(S), Hungarian LH(F) - and no knights at all except the general Reg Kn(S) - althoug…

Barry Norris I thin you still have to take the knights from 1150 (Irr Kn(O) upgraded to Reg Kn(O)) since that it is an I, T requirement and has no end date

although I am assuming that Imperial and territorial lords count as feudal troops, because looking at the list it does not actually state what Feudal troops are, so you could argue that only knights and retainers are feudal troops so the knight minima never applies unless you're taking knights.
actually re-reading the list, yeah the only time you HAVE to take knights is in 1268 in Tagliacozzo. Otherwise knights are entirely optional. The only requirement is a C-in-C. Everything else is contextual

Josh Barton That was my argument. The minimum only applies if you use them. But you have to use them if you want the Kn(I) for the wedges. Oh what fun. Have you considered Early Swiss Bk 4/41? It won't ever win but the list must be just about the simplest one in any book.

Barry NorrisI seem to be attracted to complex lists (look at late hoplite greek!).
I'm on holiday for a week so I think I'll rewrite that list into 4 lists (early feudal, late feudal, early city state, canton and republic and late city state, canton and republic).
I'll try and keep them in-line with the current list but clarify all of these problems!

The absolute strength of this army list and its armies is that no list checker has the time (or inclination) to really check it.

Ben Vartok hell I could barely be bothered checking - just so long as it seems like a vaguely medieval army I'm happy ðŸ˜›
