Question about allied generals and troops - asked by Josh Barton 15 April 2022

Question about allied generals and troops - if you take an allied general of the same nation does that allow you to go over maximum troop numbers - i.e. if I take an allied German genral in the medieval german list (that list) can I take more than 16 Blade?

I believe that the maxima and minima apply as for any ally

oh but you can't swap them into/out of the allied command can you (I'm definitely not considering a 36 IrrHd(O) and 1 General command to be a pain ðŸ˜‰

Each ally of the same nation must have a quarter of each compulsory minimum. Elements in the ally command contribute to the total available maximum of any troop type. So my reading is that you can have 16 Bd across all the commands. From the definition of allies in the army list books.

Barry Norris That's how I understand it too. They're allocated a part of the total list maximum, they aren't additional.

Barry Norris So with two internal allies, each ally would have to have the minima, but the remainder (up to 16 less the two minima) could go anywhere.

Dirk Heinsius I've devised lists where all of a particular troop type are with the ally.

John Edmundson but the list limit remains the limit? You don't get 1/2 extra maximum?

Josh Barton As I understand it the list limit is the absolute limit. The internal ally simply takes a share of them just as a Sub General would. Otherwise, consider an army like Spring and Autumn Chinese pre 700BC:
1-3 Ally generals and no sub generals.
        8-12 Irr Kn(O) chariots
        0-5 upgradable to Reg.
How many chariots can the list have and how many can be upgraded? I'd say 12 and 5 respectively, regardless of how many are under the CinC or the allies. If the allies can bring more the list completely changes. Or a list with one elephant. Is it suddenly one elephant per ally general and one for the CinC? That would be a very radical interpretation in my view. There are lists, such as Etruscan League, that stipulate a number "per general", but that is specific.

Dirk Heinsius That's my reading. In Josh's case I think he's talking about the mercenary Bd(I) which are 0-16. So an ally doesn't have to have any - but could have any or all of them. If he had Feudal Knights for example then an ally general must have 2 (one quarter of 6 rounded up) but could (in theory) have 24. Unless there are two allies then they both must have 2. The CinC does not need to have any minimum - as long the army complies.

Of course one approach, because it is "that list", is take whatever you like. Either it will be declared illegal because it's "that list" or no one will dare challenge you because it's "that list" ;^)
