El Cid, 1961, filmed in Spain with a cast of thousands (4,100 soldiers from the Spanish army plus entire populations of villages) and no CGI. If you have a spare three hours during lockdown watch this magnificent movie for the splendid cinematography, wonderful music and absolutely ripping yarn in the best tradition of picture palace film making. Subsequently, it has influenced many medieval films and TV series including, rather obviously, Game of Thrones. There is an intermission so you can make pop-corn. We watched last night on Google movies (and did make pop-corn during the intermission).
As a total aside, Sophia Loren and Charlton Heston never worked together again. They did not get on to start with and then Charlton Heston discovered that the beautiful, rising European star, Sophia Loren, was being paid much more than him! Italian investors paid for most of the movie and she was their star ⭐️
Note this is a wonderful movie, not a history of the Reconquista. As The Guardian’s critic said, “Anthony Mann jousts fast and loose with the lives of Spain's medieval masters – resulting in seriously sublime cinema.”
