Twenty players turned up for this year’s competition. A couple of last-minute withdrawals meant we had to call on substitutes on the first day, giving us 20 games on day 1, and 18 on day 2. The games are played on fixed terrain layouts with players rotating around the tables. Plenty of waterways and rivers this year for those players who had brought their boats.
The Overall Winner and holder of the Brent Senior-Partridge trophy for 2026 was Grant Brown, with a total score of 77. The Runner-up medal went to Graham Starkey, not far behind with a score of 70. Yet again, the trophy has headed out of Wellington!
We had a new prize this year for Best New Player. There have been several additions to our ranks in the last couple of years, and a few people who have returned after a long absence. Good to see. The highest scoring of these worthy gentlemen was Ash Crossland who only started playing DBMM at the Warlords club last year. Chris Blackler from Levin also did well.
Best Presented Army went to Kelly Gay with a beautiful Ottoman Turk army which impressed the judges, just a wee bit more so than 3 other excellent contenders: Dan Wade's Early Imperial Romans, Vince Cholewa's Lithuanians, and Graham Starkey's Picts.
There were 5 armies eligible for Best Irregular Army, the "Hairy Barbarian" award for irregular armies up to 1066AD, after which it’s assumed that medieval armies were relatively civilised and less hairy. The medal went to Graham Starkey with Picts, a smidgin ahead of Allen Yaxley and his Normans.
There was a new award this year for Best Psiloi Performance given for heroic deeds by one of their psiloi elements during the game. The deserved winner was the psiloi unit which ambushed a column of LH(S) in a marsh, causing 3 of their elements to flee into the marsh and drown; only 2 elements escaped due to an unfortunate lack of PIPs. Well done Allen Yaxley.
