What I did at the weekend. I played four games in the DBMM competition at the Wellington Warlords’ annual Call to Arms. Thank you so much to
Paul Graham, who ran the DBMM competition, and to the Wellington Warlords for such a great weekend. 20 people (plus a couple of reserves due to illness) took part in DBMM, which is played on pre-set terrain, with players moving around the tables. Overall, about 150 people took part in all competitions and demo games.
I used my new Lithuanian army for the first time in full-size games, previously having played DBMM 100 and 200 with it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to applying lessons about an army based around lots of ordinary light horse and cavalry, with a few additional friends (Tatars and Poles). My opponents were gentlemen all, and I had a great time every game. They were an order, Graham Starkey (Picts), Michael Stonyer (Late Imperial Romans), Raymond Dick (Ghurids ) and Neil Williamson (Pechnegs).
Paul will provide full results, and thank you again for all your work and good humour in the face of outrageous fortune and wargamers. You did a great job

| Deployment vs Graham Starkey (Picts). My flank march on my right was a bit slow to roll to arrive, and then got one PIP on its arrival bound to wait a little longer! 14-11 |
| Game 1 |
| My army’s backstory. I do one for each of my armies. |
| Game 2 |
| Of course they were witches in the wood! The great bard would have approved. “When will we three meet again, in thunder lightning or in rain”. |
| Mike Stonyer (Late Imperial Romans) having his first bound. My flank march will arrive soon on the right. |
| My flank match has arrived, Mike has redeployed his reserve and is pondering. My combat dice on this flank were “less than average”, while my Mike’s PIP dice at crucial bounds were truly, impressively dreadful! 15-10 |
| Some of Mike’s gorgeous dromedarii |
| Game 3 |
| Early in the game vs Raymond Dick (Ghurids). My flank march will arrive on my left. The game played out with both our respective left commands breaking, lots of casualties, both armies on the edge with the real prospect of the game ending with both armies broken. I was lucky enough to hold on for a sketchy win, 17-8. |
| vs Neil Williamson (Pechnegs) with 14 war wagons and clouds of fast and superior light horse. The pic doesn’t show there was actually quite a lot of terrain on the table. A stonking game ending with each army having one command demoralised and others teetering. 13-12 |
| Game 4 |
And the winner was, Grant Brown (Sicilians). Well done Grant, a thoroughly deserved win for a great bloke Yes, Richard Foster is wearing his Leeds United hat and scarf, of course.
There he is! Well done Grant! |
