In search of Southern Sortie chariot racing rules - posted by Vince Cholewa, 7 June 2022

Does anyone still have the chariot racing game that was published in one of the New Zealand wargaming magazines? It might have been in the Christchurch club magazine.

An amazingly beautiful Roman mosaic of a chariot race, discovered at the 'Villa Selene' (House of the Moon), which was buried for 1,800 years under dunes on the coast near Leptis Magna, in present-day Libya.
To the left, you can see the starting boxes, with open doors.

Unfortunately not, but on my to-do list is chariot racing using the Rudis rules.

It was in the Christchurch mag, Southern Sortie. I very much doubt I still have it but it was a hoot. Robin Sutton might know of a copy. Maybe?

Basically you diced for speed on the straight but selected your speed on the corners iirc. You had a higher risk of crashing or sustaining damage on the inside lane but there were fewer steps so you got round quicker. I seem to remember you could whip your opponent with variable results, from damage through to advancing them a couple of steps.
