Questions: Bow moving to contact and deployment dice - asked by Raymond Dick, 23 May 2022

1) After a rules clarification as this seems to be played differently.
Can a bow element move into contact with an element of knights, if another element has also contacted this bound:
Yes, since they can’t shoot at it, someone is in contact with it.
No, as movement is simultaneous the knights aren’t in combat yet.

2) Dice for deployment. If the raw scores are equal, now dice a second time. Does the rule for the invading army deploying first if it doubles, count on the re-roll?

Re: 1 - Logically no (and I originally thought this). But I think that we allow legal movement in an order specified by the active player. On that basis if you move an element into contact, the bowmen can no longer safely shoot and pile in.

Barry Norris hmm I always interpreted it as 'since the bow cannot shoot in the subsequent distant combat phase so it is legal'.

Josh Barton In game terms I think you are right. But logically either the shooting happens while movement is going on - the game is continuous - in which case the bows can shoot 'cos their mates aren't in the way yet; or shooting happens after movement in which case by the time the bows realise their mates are in the way they can't necessarily get there. Best read I can take is that the bows see their mates starting to go in and say "Bows down boys, grab your daggers".

Barry Norris the latter is how I take it, coupled with closing in to skirmish closer up as support for the attack.
That said, I also wonder if foot should be allowed to close in on cavalry at all - it takes a brave footman to want to attack charging knights...

Josh Barton Not a bad idea but one I would only apply it to front edge-to-front edge contacts. If the foot can hit mounted in the side or rear, I think they should be permitted to do so.

Re: 2 - The extra roll appears to only affect time of day (if the raw scores were equal then then order of deployment is already settled - defender first since the invader did not double).
