Question 2: moving out of TZ into contact - asked by John Edmundson, 20 May 2022

Question two. The Pharoah's brave thureophoroi have the LPIA Ps in a TZ. The Ps have a variety of options, including moving straight forward if that contacts an enemy front edge. I believe ( should have checked this more thoroughly yesterday but my opponent ran out of PIPs making it a moot point) Train treat the first contacted edge as the front edge (but maybe that's only WWg). Could the Ps have moved straight forward, aligned, and EMTLUed into legal contact with my useless piece of sh*t couldn't hit a pyramid door from one cubit artillery?

Is this a which comes first question, the chicken or the egg?
Well the threat zone rules are on page 32, and the front edge of train are on page 35.
So as page 32 comes first, the train at that time has its flank edge exposed, so the psiloi cannot contact.

Looking at, a move straight forward would result in a corner contact which is not a legal contact for a single element - as far as I remember. So I think the only option for the psiloi would be to turn and line up. Although that seems counterintuitive to me.

Barry Norris I'd agree, though it is a little odd that the exact angle of the artillery piece makes a difference.

What an intersting question. If I was an umpire I would say the Ps could contact and fight the artillery becuase the Ps can contact the corner, conform to the flank, and Art flank counts as the front. I think the relevant points to consider are:
The first bullet point under"threat zone" p.32 says "line up in front edge-to-front edge combat with the contacted enemy element most directly in front."
"It is an absolute requirement that troops that would move into close combat in real life must do so in the game." Also, a single element can contact an enemy corner, but it cannot stay there and fight as a corner contact. Instead, it must conform to an edge. (Moving into close combat, p.33)
"Otherwise, train and boats count the edge first contacted by an enemy front edge as their front edge ..." (Turning to face flank or rear contact,p.35)

I'd be inclined to disallow it on the basis that the flank edge is not in any way "threatening" in the way that an element's front is. That seems to be the spirit of the rule.

The rule on page 35 is under the close combat section. It should be read, imo, as "... Train, and Boats, COUNT the edge first contacted by an enemy front edge as their front edge..." for close combat purposes.
Until such time ie. it is in combat, the artillery is exposing its flank to the psiloi.
The psiloi, as it is in a TZ, cannot move into contact with the artillery as per the bullet points on p32.
    Just my penny's worth.

Good comments, all, lots of food for thought. Not quite sure of the angles in the picture but it looks like the Ps move straight forward and contact the Art front corner. This is one of the contacts permitted by the fifth bullet point under threat zone: "Move straight forward ... into contact with an enemy front edge or front corner only ..." After contacting the Ps would conform to the Art.
