Report from the inaugural Auckland Cup
While the event may evolve into a more traditional tournament in the future, the inaugural event was aimed as a way to attract new people to the DBMM system.
To this end we had five relative newcomers attending alongside seven of the "usual suspects". The new entrants ranged from a complete newcomer to Ancient/Medieval wargaming through to a returning ex-DBM player. Games were played at a variety of sizes and scales, with 120AP games for
complete beginners, 240AP games for those with some experience and even a couple of 400AP 15mm games!
Games were generally one of our regulars playing against the newcomers although two 'full fat' 400AP 28mm games were also played to show off the full size experience.
The 120AP games in particular proved a great hit. Not only did the smaller size game help with teaching the basic mechanisms but they proved engaging games in their own right.
They are also an attractive entry point for new players, representing a highly achievable painting target for those starting armies from scratch, allowing them to start gaming in a fraction of the time it would take to complete a full 400+ AP collection.

Some "Full Fat" action: Ghaznavids vs Ming Chinese
CommentsKelly GaySmart enough to avoid the artillery anyway! |
Ben VartokThanks for organising Benny, it was great fun!
Luke InglisAwesome, a little jealous and a lot inspired.
Ben VartokIn the morning my Ghaznavids took on the merciless Ming led by Richard foster. Great game called a draw. One moment was especially amusing as my LH S charged up a hill into the gun line , surviving two shots and taking out 4 in one bound!
Tilman DangBen Vartok Sounds like a one sided amusement...
Funny, the Ming stopped foraging abroad historically....
