“Circumspect Penelope”, yes the one from the Odyssey (and Dunedin). Where but in Dunedin in the 1980s would a band write pop songs influenced by the Odyssey (Circumspect Penelope), the Aeneid (Winged Rumour) and Henry Longfellow (Hiawatha)? Last night at the Taite music awards, 1980s Dunedin band, Look Blue Go Purple, received the award for a classic record, at least 20 years old, that is still influencing New Zealand musicians today. The album is “Compilation” and Circumspect Penelope was on their first EP, Bewitched, and I was! Especially by the drummer, Lesley Paris. Scroll down in this link to a video of their rather lovely acceptance speech last night https://www.rnz.co.nz/.../vera-ellen-wins-2024-taite....
In the comments I will post LBGP’s most successful song and best produced video, the wonderfully upbeat and just fun, Cactus Cat, and Circumspect Penelope.
