Vandali Justiniani - shsared by John Dods, 18 April 2024

Possible member of the Vandali Justiniani based on the mosaic from Madaba.
Emperor Justinian got rid of some of the potentially problematic remaining Vandal men by forming a new imperial regiment from these, which he named after himself VANDALI IVSTINIANI/"Justinian's Vandals", divided them into five Bandons of cavalry, and by a proven method immediately sent them far from home to the east to face the Persians. That this was not an entirely voluntary recruitment is evident from the fact that during the voyage some of these Vandals, numbering about 400, mutinied and seized control of the ships which were to carry them east.
However, the remaining 4 Bandons of Justinian's Vandals arrived in the east as planned and have served loyally there ever since as a regular unit of the Imperial Army(even under Belisarius himself, their former conqueror).

Justinian, the last of the “Romans”? The emperors that followed gave up on the west as not worth the expense of campaigning.

Vincent Cholewa "Last of the Romans" is rather absurd honorific concept shared by too many "last"Romans.Emperors right after Justinian didn't gave up on west. They simply were not in position which would allowed them to prosecute more active role there but as far as early 7th century they repeatedly actively tried to keep as much as they could. To follow up similar large reconquest as Justinian did, that was however out of question and it was structure on feet of clay already under Justinian.
