Ancient British cavalry with round shields? Asked by Dan Williams, 5 November 2021

I have assembled some Victrix Gallic Cavalry to use with my Ancient Britons. This will enable me to have a legal Army at last. These figures have round shields supplied but I cannot find a definitive answer if these would be correct for the Army? I have plenty of round decals so hope this wont be an expensive mistake.

Hi [Dave] Dan. Yes my understanding for Gallic and Celtic cavalry is round shields are more usual.
Oval shields more common for infantry.
Being the choice of the warrior no problem doing some mix and match to taste.

According to Ian Heath’s books, “Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome” and “Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars” round shields are fine. The first pic is from AEIR, and the other two from AMPW.
