This is the oldest song in the world (or is it a tribute?) - Vince Cholewa 08/01/2021

Book 1, list 19: The oldest written song in the world, “The Hurrian Hymn.” This morning I heard part of the hymn being sung and a brief story about it on Radio NZ’s Morning Report. For copyright reasons - it is sourced from the BBC - they cannot post on the Radio NZ website. A link to the full nine minute BBC story is below.
“Often called the Hurrian Hymn, it had been unearthed amid the ruins of an ancient palace which belonged to the ancient Hurrian civilization. It is the oldest complete song ever found. The tablet was inscribed in the Hurrian language but using cuneiform script. Academics have spent decades debating how to interpret the song's ancient musical notation.”

  • Thanks Vince. Interesting - and quite haunting. Mildly ironic that copyright means something broadcast on the World Service can't be put on a website on the other side of the world, but there you go.

yes. RNZ pays for the right to edit and broadcast BBC stories but not to post them online.

  • This sort of thing is one of the reasons I love this hobby; it's deepened my interest in the history of humanity in all its aspects.
