My first game of 2021, vs John Calnan at his lovely house in Hamilton. John's Later Sargonid Assyrians invaded Egypt to be opposed by my newly minted New Kingdom Egyptians (who are in the so practical 20mm scale - chariots actually fit on 60x60 bases without overhangs!).
DBMM, De Bellis Magistrorum Militum, are wargames rules for ancient and medieval battles from 3000 BC to 1525 AD. The rules are written by Phil Barker and published by the Wargames Research Group Limited Publications. The rules, army lists and books are available from www.wrg.me.uk The purpose of this blog is to promote the rules in New Zealand by sharing information and photos. Battle report - Later Sargonid Assyrians vs New Kingdom Egyptians - Andrew Bennetts 05/01/2021
I deployed with a command of Sherden and Libyan mercenaries on my left, using the Nile to cover the flank, with Pharaoh Bennykhamun himself making sure the Libyan Wb stayed under control. In the centre was a mixed command of Bd(X) and Bd(F) screened by Ps and supported by chariots while on the right was a smaller command of archers, light troops and more chariots.
The Assyrians had a HUGE command of foot and mounted facing the Sherden and Libyans, a smaller command of Kn(S) and Cv(S) in the centre and a Skythian Ally facing my right.
The early bounds saw lots of careful manouvering, the Sherden and Libyans being less than keen to mix it with the massed Assyrian infantry (most of whom were S of some variety) while in the centre much time was taken up as Bd(X) tried to line up Kn chariots, who in turn tried to line up the Egyptian chariots. However, the Eye of Horus favoured Bennykhamun and a string of low pips for the Assyrians saw the Egyptians gain the crucial match ups. Bd(X) carved up the Assyrian chariots (including a General) and, while a couple of Egyptian chariots were lost, this was enough to break the Assyrian centre, with ME transmission taking out the Skythians, who were struggling on the right against the combination of Cv(S) and Bw.
So a maiden victory for the NKE and a big thanks to John (& Sylvia) for hosting me, not least for the sumptuous lunch!
