Post-Mongol Samuari vs French Ordonnace and Pre-Feudal Scots - posted by Barry Norris, 25 October 2021

Game day Upper Hutt. 24/10/2021. Thanks to Allen Yaxley we had 10 eager generals and fought two battles each.
I was running post-Mongol Samurai c1474. First up was Phil with French Ordonnance. The main feature on the battlefield was a non-navigable river running across slightly on my side of the table. This would have a major effect as Phil's knights - Kn(S) - on his right stared at my Samurai across it for the entire game. Not a great PIP roll first up including the monk ally rolling a 1! Reserve cavalry marched around the hill to shore up the right. Happily the CinC managed to active the monks a couple of bounds later. Phil advanced his infantry (Swiss and some bow and psiloi) with knight backing and his guns. The ashigaru - Pk(F) - promptly charged the guns across the river (avoiding the Swiss) alongside the monks who had just woken up. Mayhem ensured and the guns went away (having stood rather longer than they should have) along with a collection of Psiloi and bow. The French left disheartened and eventually broke. Meanwhile the Swiss had splashed though the river and were chewing through the Samurai blade. When we called time it was 14-11 to the Samurai. Defending (Aggression 0 anyone) and laying lots terrain certainly helped.
Game 2 was against Ross and the pre-feudal Scots. Monks - reliable this time - on the right across a river that carved off about 1/3 of the right flank. Long line of blade, pike an bow against the Scots' line of Wb(s) and pike. Clonk. Sadly the thegns - Wb(s) - chewed up the Samurai in front of them and the reserve cavalry didn't get there to help (first PIP roll was 1,1,2,2 - but at least the monks got a 2). Eventually the thegns plus some attrition in the push of pike broke the centre command which left the army a few ME off breaking so we called it. 22-3 to Ross. A win the the thegns. Highlight for the Samurai was the Bw(S) picking off the Cavalry general. Learning - it's hard enough to deploy the Samurai (apart from the Cv(O) they deploy in the centre section) so more care is needed in placing the terrain on my side.
Two good games against great opponents. Nice to play competitively but in good spirit - which seems to pretty universal in the DBMM community.

One day soon I'll figure the Samurai out - and then watch out.

The Samurai army squished between the hill and the river

And the French

The whole Samurai army.

Battle 2 against the Scots. Rather more reliable monks on the right again

The thegns hack their way through the samurai and the reserve cavalry arrives too late

Samurai left. And by left I mean left out of the battle

And the Scots line up

Samurai centre guarding a ford. Eventually the Swiss paddled across

Battle 1 against the French. A bunch of unreliable monks on the right flank
Battle is joined

Good on you Barry. I absolutely agree with you about the importance of terrain - it is very important. The army I am currently using, Later Polish, has aggression 1. Usually, that gives me the major say in choosing terrain and the first move, which I like.
