I took on Doug’s mongols today with the Middle Imperial Romans 450 ap.
There were a few rough hills and a BUA which had almost no effect on the game. The Romans deployed in the classic formation, a row of legionaries with caltrops guarding the refused flank, Praetorians, Archers and Auxilia Palatinate in the centre, and the Armenians and the Equites Alares on the left.
The Roman Cavalry and the Armenian LH(F) took on a small Mongol LH command and quickly disheartened it, allowing the Armenian Kn (F) to crash into the Mongol artillery taking them out as well. Would have been even more effective if the Roman cavalry general hadn’t bee 6-1’d
Meanwhile the Mongol Cv(S), tried to make a hole in the Praetorian, Palatinate, Archer line, failing miserably and then suffering when the legionaries came out from behind their caltrops to swing onto the flank.
25-0 to Rome.
Lessons:
My love hate relationship with Irr Kn(F), is back in the love camp after they performed brilliantly
LH(F) and Cv(O) work brilliantly together at exploiting hard flanks, especially when from different commands.
No one expects the legionaries to come out from behind their caltrops.
