Three games of DBMM in sunny Horowhenua - posted by Vince Cholewa, 2 December 2024

Yesterday, [Sunday December 1] what a good day for playing with toy soldiers! We had four tables being used, 12 players and a couple of visitors interested in wargaming. Thank you so much everyone who took part and especially to Barry Norris and Celia, and Alastair Duncan who travelled from Wellington to play - Horowhenua turned on the sun 🌞🚙ðŸŽē⚔️
Welcome to Alan Cassidy (who I went to school with last century) and who has pike and shot armies, and to the mum who was showing her five-year-old son the school he is about to start at. Her partner is interested in wargaming.
Our games were a five-player Napoleonic extravaganza and three ancient games.
Bryan Fowler continued Napoleon’s conquest of Europe when he and David Lloyd (French and Grand Duchy of Warsaw) took on the Austro-Anglo or Anglo-Austrian alliance (there was some debate about who had precedence) of Brett, Ed Gough and Stephen McPhail. I think it was the Franco-Poles who won (apologies if I got that wrong but that sort of mistake can add spice to an FB post !😝). Gorgeous figures and nice terrain on a most picturesque base cloth. The rules were Lasalle 2nd edition.
Samuel Taylor (Medieval French) played Chris Blackler (Late imperial Roman) using DBMM 100 (a version of the DBMM rules for ancient and medieval games using about quarter-sized armies). David Taylor took part as advisor and observer. The French knights prevailed on one flank, while in the centre the legion rolled a series of sad combat dice. Vive la France!
Alastair Duncan (Macedonians) was in fighting mood after David Wright (Syracusan) said he was looking forward to the game against barbarians! I am not sure of the result but a notable event was captured in the pics. (Rules: DBMM, 400 or 450 points - I should have asked but I didn’t ðŸĪ·‍♂️)
Barry brought Early Carthaginians to play my Mitanni. I was able to apply pressure on both flanks - on one with superiority of light troops in terrain and the other with a flank march drawing away troops. In the centre, Mitanni and Hittite chariots made repeated charges against spear of mixed quality (inferior, ordinary and superior) and warband. We called it a day with the chariots finally having broken through part of the spear-warband line and that command disheartened. (Rules: DBMM , 400 points)
Wargaming was definitely the winner!
Next meeting, 10am, Sunday December 15, Levin East School. See you there 😊

Levin East School hall. Our next meeting is 10am, Sunday, December 15.

Four of the five Napoleonic players: Bryan and David (French and Grand Duchy of Warsaw) vs Ed, Stephen and Brett (who is not in the pic) using Austrians and British.

Looks like a lot of cavalry in this game.

Vincent Cholewa Napoleonic cavalry games move very quickly back and forth across the table.

Nice table ðŸ’•

Samuel Taylor (medieval French) vs Chris Blackler (late imperial Roman). Sensei, David Taylor, in the centre.

David Wright (Syracusan) vs Alastair Duncan (Macedonians)

Alastair Duncan summoned the devil and his brother - four sixes!
Andrew Bennetts
Sacrilege! Those are Roman dice! Is there no limit to his perfidityðŸĪŠ

Barry Norris (early Carthaginian) had the first bound vs my Mitanni.
