Levin DBMM competition: And the winner was ... posted by Vince Cholewa, 31 July 2023

Levin DBMM competition, early and classical Greeks and their enemies, played at the Levin Cosmopolitan Club, July 29-30: and the winner was (drum roll) ... Wargaming!
Thank you so much to everyone who took part, we really appreciated your time and effort to travel to Levin. There was a lovely, friendly, warm buzz around the hall - we were pickin' up good vibrations 😁
It was good to see so many people come through who weren't playing and how welcomed they were. There were other DBMMers, visitors from the ladies' pool tournament on Saturday and from the darts competition on Sunday, and a number of people responding to some publicity we put out to help get a local gaming group going. Next steps are being planned for local gamers 🎲
Also much appreciated was the good discussion about next year (yes!) and possibilities for a theme. Ideas bounced around included Imperial Rome and its enemies, a similar theme to this year's but with the requirement that armies must include a stated minimum of spear, and Philip to Cleopatra - Macedonians, Successors and their enemies. More on a theme for next year later.
The results were:
Gold, Richard Foster, Polybian Roman, 70 points.
Silver, Neil Williamson, Skythian, 66.
Bronze, Keith V Trye, Galatians, 65.
A great finish in round 4, with Richard and Neil playing in the top of the table clash. Neil was edging ahead 15-10 when time was called at four hours, and Richard was hanging on to that lead. Keith scored a 25-0 win to be just short of catching Neil.
Best army, Andrew Bennetts', gorgeous 20mm Sea People. These are a mixture of plastic and some metal (Newline Designs, I think?). Nicely painted and based, all in one, consistent, attractive style.
Best baggage, Craig Mabon, Spartan. A nicely done camp complete with somebody's sheep. Did they travel with the Spartans or were the acquired along the way?
General slayer, Richard Foster, Polybian Roman, accounted for four of his opponents' generals.
Looter of baggage, Alastair Duncan, various armies, with a most impressive haul of eight.
The Harpy, coming for the dead, Craig Mabon. A much nicer trophy than a wooden spoon. I think finishing with 26 points from four games and winning the Harpy shows how competitive games were.
4. Andrew Bennetts, Sea People, 64
5. Ivan Truong, Alexandrian Macedonian, 55
6. Julian Hannam, Early Carthaginian, 54
7= Barry Norris, Early Carthaginian, 52
7= Josh Barton, Theban, 52
9. Paul Graham , Later Achaemenid Persian, 49
10. Alastair Donald, Spartan, 47
11. David Wright, Syracusan, 46
12. Graham Starkey, Alexandrian Macedonian, 45
13. Alastair Duncan, various armies, 39
14. Drew Fortune, Early Carthaginian, 35
15= John van den Hoeven, Trojan, 26
15= Craig Mabon, Spartan, 26

From the left, Bronze, Silver and Gold trophies and the specially labelled DBMM wine. The horse head trophy will be passed on from winner to winner.

From the back left: Looter of Baggage, The Harpy, Best Baggage, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Best Army, Slayer of Generals (it's only a flesh wound!). The horse head trophy was originally for the Wairarapa Two Day Match and has been repurposed for the Levin DBMM competition so it continues in circulation.

Round 4, top of the table, Richard Foster (Polybian Romans) makes the first PIP die roll vs Neil Williamson (Skythian). This game ended as a winning draw, 15-10, to Neil.

Keith Trye, your prize. Let me us know if you will be passing through Levin or if you have the services of a mule (plain, unmarked package). Otherwise, Mim and I are likely to be in Taranaki sometime before the next Levin competition!

Alastair Duncan, your trophy. See you in Wellington this week?

Alastair, also yours as Looter of Baggage. Local product from RJ's liquorice factory in Levin.
