Coins of Pyrrhus - posted by Vince Cholewa, 8 August 2020

The finest of Pyrrhus’s coins are considered masterpieces of Hellenistic art. Check out the pics in the link, and consider their size. In pre-COVID days the best examples were fetching eye-watering sums at auctions.

Interestingly, “Although his peers, the other Hellenistic kings, were proudly placing their own portraits on coinage, Pyrrhus never did. His coins all bear the images of gods and goddesses. Our picture of his appearance comes from Roman copies of idealized Greek sculptures made long after his death.”
