Best way to get figures off bases? Posted by Phil Gates

A question for the wise. I have a small Macedonian army based for Impetus on mdf bases, that I either want to rebase for DBMM. What's the best way to get the figures off the bases? Will soaking them in water for a while weaken the hold of the mdf and glue?

John Garvey Yes, the best advice is to put them in a tray of water just deep enough to cover the bases. Leave overnight and the figs should just pop off.

  • Philip Gates Thanks. I was hoping something like that might work.
  • John Garvey Interestingly I used to base using epoxy on cardboard bases, and the same technique worked. Except the bases dissolved and the figs ended up having a little plinth of epoxy!
  • John Garvey And also a good reason why to base figs using white glue (wood glue)

  • James Trotman If you used superglue you can hold the figures base with a pair of needle nose pliers and the unit base in the other hand and give it a sharp twist - should come off clean. CA glue has very little torsional strength.
