Just about half way there with the Thebans - the Psiloi are done, and the phalanx is beginning to take shape. Thank you to Vincent Cholewa for the shield designs :)
However, sadly I've run out of basing materials for the moment!

Michael Stonyer Hey Josh, Great work
- Kevin McCarthy How do you pronounce psiloi?
- Kevin McCarthy Josh Barton lol they are punny whichever way you pronounce them
- Josh Barton Kevin McCarthy true! I'd follow Allen's pronunciation, he knows more about the period than me :)
- John Edmundson psiloi - ps as in lapse, i as in it, loi as in ploy. In other words the p is pronounced (not in modern Greek I think, but in Attic Greek) and the i is short. It isn't s-eye-loi. BTW one psilos, lots of psiloi but one element is already lots . . . Here's a useful li…See More
- Kevin McCarthy John Edmundson thank you.
- Kevin McCarthy So it is pee s e loy?
- Kevin McCarthy Josh Barton it's all theban to me!
Alastair Donald Theban psiloi - it’s an “uuungh!” sound as the Spartan dory slams into their chest cavity. And then a delicate crack sound as the saurator descends into the back of their prostrate body’s skull. Al the Spartan.
- Russell Briant Josh Barton if you are a Spartan they don’t recognise any (other) elite hoplites?
And then there was Leuctra! - Josh Barton Leuctra was what I was thinking, it must have been a huge blow to Spartan arrogance and pride (especially when it was followed up by another defeat!)
- Alastair Donald Typical theban claiming an Athenian victory. You are mistaking arrogance and pride for competence. How many Sacred Band were there? How many bases of SpS should that be?
- Josh Barton How many Sacred Band? More than enough apparently...
Oh it definitely was an Athenian victory and I wouldn't claim another's glory (unlike a certain city state with Thermopylae ;) ) - Josh Barton Alastair Donald I don't suppose you're based in Wellington - it'd be great to fight Sparta for my first battle when I finish the Thebans :)
Dirk Heinsius Persian cavalry ride them down as well
- Dirk Heinsius Only difficult terrain will stop me, and for that I have Bows
- Dirk Heinsius Sp(S) will go through the Bw(X) as Al the Spartan proved to me very effectively, however you'll struggle with Sp(O), esp if Regular.
- Josh Barton Dirk Heinsius yeah I was just thinking Irr Sp(O) is becoming more appealing the more I think about it, one ap cheaper and you gain impetuous. But then I couldn't use Epaminondas
- Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton And your maneuverability suffers
- Josh Barton Dirk Heinsius true but if you get enough spear to cover the board maneuverability is less important :p
- Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton True
- Josh Barton Dirk Heinsius still I prefer regular armies, and being impetuous is not always a good thing
- Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton It's good when trying to close with archers :-)
