Question: Turn 180 and then move off in column? Posted by Neill Williamson, 12 August 2019

Rules Question
I have placed this on the DBMM forum but there is not much traffic there so I thought I'd try here.
Can a group (in 2 or more ranks) in line turn 180 and then move off in column, in one tactical move?
The relevant page is page 29.
The first para is about changing formation, the 2nd is about changes in direction.
I'm pretty sure that a change of formation move can include a change of direction particularly as at the beginning of the 2nd para an expansion from column is specifically excluded. However, the wording "entire" in the first sentence could be interpreted as not including any other manoeuvres
The 2nd bullet states that the "future front element of the column either moves forward or pivots 90..."
So is this exclusive or could other manoeuvres be performed prior to this? Specifically I'm thinking of the 180 but could also include a straight move, wheel, or sideways shift.
I think it is open to interpretation but would welcome some pearls of wisdom.

Dirk Heinsius Unless expanding from a column, a group move can include only these changes of direction:
• 1 initial or final (but not both) 180° turn if the group is either disheartened, entirely regular land or (unless
a general) entirely Cavalry and/or light troop

  • John Edmundson I would think, per Dirk and Vince above, that this would be a permissible move. Another place you could get a response to this sort of query is the DBMMlist on yahoo groups.

  • Neil Williamson Thanks everyone. You will now see my LH "advancing" to the rear even more speedily.
