WRG Sneak Peek - slow reveal - The Revised Lists
Somewhat late getting back to Peter Feinler’s post re sneak peek – but I expected someone to leak something, but everyone has certainly kept openly quiet.
It’s now time to share some of what was discussed – this will be across a few posts.
Firstly, and of most importance to this group – there has been a project running for the last few months to REVISE all of the 4 DBMM Lists – all 4 books.
This has been spearheaded by Greg Mann (who was the original instigator) ably assisted by other notaries in Duncan Head, Andreas Johansson and Peter Kershaw and with a strong assist from Mick Hession.
This project is a revision it is not a rewrite – within WRG (well certainly Phil) the perception is that DBMM is complete and thus has no need to be altered. Whilst that may not be a view we all share it is where we are like it or not and we need to work within those parameters . So, taking that into account the brief was to correct any mistakes and to reformat the lists into a more readable format – it was not to make sweeping changes.
What has changed is best taken from the team’s Preface recreated below.
Split and reworked the Medieval German list (any list checker will see it as worth it all for that alone)
Made all data ranges inclusive and used a consistent format
Reformatted to make lists easier to read. This will always be subjective and not everyone will like what has been done.
Separated out the list-specific rules and restrictions from the list notes (these are now bullet points after the main list and before the notes text.)
Moved sections so that sub-sections appear in date order of when available.
Indented foreign allies who do not have a list of their own where this aids consistency and clarity
Modified the introductory wording and allies to reflect actual practice and be consistent across all 4 list books
Based upon queries and social media comments updated some lists and notes to make the intention as clear as possible.
Dealt with some minor inconsistencies across lists (e.g. Bastarnae in Pontic list)
Fixed minor textual errors, such as incorrect points costs, and contradictory text.
Where possible, re-ordered terrain to be in placement order (following feedback from Lawrence at Challenge). The main exceptions to this are where terrain types vary according to date or location, or where only one of several types are permitted and they are in different parts of the placement order.
Provided both fixed and mobile baggage to nearly all armies.
There are many other changes they would like to have made, but the focus of this effort has been to improve clarity and consistency and correct outright errors rather than to reevaluate historical judgements. This was the premise upon which the deal to do this was agreed within WRG.
At Challenge we had some example pages which people had a look at – those that were there feel free to comment now. I’ll add some sample samples to files by weekend. You will also then note the coloured headers.
The first internal pre-publication draft of Book 1 see cover attached - arrived last week and has flagged some design issues that we are already addressing. Book 2 pre pub is now in the pipeline and we are hoping to have a single copy of each book available at Britcon for perusal. It’s always hard to tell exact times but I would be happy to commit that they will be all out for Xmas (2025).
I will provide more information regarding publication, pricing, distribution channels etc. as it becomes available.
Trust that whets the appetite - more to follow.
Kind Regards

Considering the goal is to improve clarity and consistency hopefully they'll work on the rulebook next
