The annual Call to Arms wargames convention was hosted by the Wellington Warlords club over last weekend (August 31st/September 1st), including a DBMM Ancients competition with 18 players from around the country. Players were organised into two groups representing local players and visitors, in order that we get to play people we don’t usually meet (and to add a little extra trash talk to the encounters). Terrain is fixed on the 9 tables, and designed to simulate actual ancient (mostly) battlefields; this year we played on tables representing Chalons, Magnesia, Marathon, Bouvines, Dunsinane, Balaclava, Tewkesbury, Civitata and Yarmouk. The two groups of players move around the tables in opposite directions so that they don’t play twice on the same table.
Final placings were very tight, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place having to be separated by countbacks to earlier rounds. The overall winner was Allen Yaxley, using his Feudal English and scoring 79/100. There were also prizes for Best Presented Army, Most Cunning Player, and the highest scoring Book I, II, III and IV armies.
I've attached the full list of prize winners and scores at the end of the competition. Congratulations to everyone involved, it was an excellent turnout and a fun event. Again.
