Phil MalthusI look forward to a review>I never thought Sulla was more monstrous than any of the late republic dictators or quasi-dictators, certainly less than (say) end of life Marius. It's just the inevitable end-stage of a prolonged struggle between an entrenched plutocracy, and a wider-based movement, where both sides have been violently shown the results of compromise. I look forward to examining the same process at close range in the USA, fairly soon.2- Like

- Tilman DangPhil Malthus interesting remark! Yes, similar in ways, albeit not the same. Bureaucracy and Lawyers are a 1000 times more numerous today and have a much tighter grip on government, no matter if the figurehead is blue or orange. Marx is right on this. History repeats, but what would have been a tragedy on former rehearsals is just a farce today. The US of today is far more encrusted in its bureaucratic issues than the Romans ever where, and the Orange Duck is as far from Sulla, who actually had ulterior motifs beyond just wielding power, as it gets, looking at the lack of achievements while in office.

- Potbelly MiniaturesPhil Malthus well, as far as I know he didn't commit a genocide, so he's one up on Julius...

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup expertWho gets to write history and how they do it is fascinating. I see on the back cover the author is a member of the Richard III society. Another much-maligned figure, possibly more sinned against than sinner.
