Thebans vs Phyrric - posted by Josh Barton, 11 January 2020

Some photos of my Thebans vs Paul's Phyrric army. Both of use had brilliant generals, and we had a Trojan-style general fight before we began - which Phyrrus 'retired' from, taking Epimonandas' shield with him.
The battle itself was a simple affair dictated by the terrain - the Thebans advanced up the middle in a solid line, as the Phyrric infantry held back.
On the left Phyrrus led his cavalry against the Thebans' cavalry and hamippoi. After some impressive gains against the hamippoi things slowly turned on that flank as the Phyrric companions were caught in the rear attempting to withdraw and reposition. The following fight saw them broken up and surrounded by the Theban cavalry, with Phyrrus himself falling at the end.
The elephants, some of the pike and psiloi quickly broke the Theban lines, killing six bases of hoplites to no losses. However, with Theban cavalry moving behind them they were unable to capitalise on their breakthrough
On the right the Italian auxilia attacked the Theban psiloi... and collapsed (Paul rolled 5 ones in a single bound  ). The rest of the command fled as the Italians were cut down.
The heavy centers took all game to meet in the middle, with only one bound of hoplites fighting phalangites in an inconclusive push. However, with the collapse of both flanks, and the death of Phyrrus the Epirot-Italian army collapsed, giving the Greeks a hard-fought victory.
As always thanks to Paul for the game, it was a lot closer than the eventual score suggested, with some terrible dice rolls deciding it in my favour. Certainly early on I was worried that my army was going to disintegrate in the face of the elephants.
