A question about Manx Vikings and Sea - asked by Vince Cholwewa, 6 April 2026

Yesterday at our wargaming meeting in Levin we were looking at the Norse Viking and Leidang list, Bk 3/40. Does the compulsory sea apply to Manx Viking? It feels like it should because if you at playing at home on the Isle of Man there’s an awful lot of sea and not much land. However, we got a bit tangled in the wording with its exclusions and different kinds of Vikings. I am tending to the answer being, yes, the seas is compulsory for Manx Viking. How have others read this?

My read is that Sea is compulsory for all types of Vikings (Dublin, Manx and other). Not compulsory for Leidang. If you want sea, take the Dublin Vikings as they have a lower aggression (Ag 1) and are more likely to defend. Manx Vikings are more likely to be the attacker (Ag 4).

Barry Norris Many thanks. We were getting tangled with how “Other Viking” applied. I see the logic, it applies to aggression. The several and varied other qualifiers apply to terrain.

Vincent Cholewa Yes. "Other" in this case means "Not from Dublin". Thank you Phil B.

Barry Norris lots and lots of information jammed into few words. Saves space but can make comprehension difficult.

Barry Norris Dublin Vikings are nice friendly Vikings. All the aggressive ones are beyond the pale.

Manx are Vikings so they get their sea.

Never leave home without your Sea! Frankly (or Vikingly) you want a sea to protect your flank - in my “many losses as Vikings” experience.
