BIG game, Rome vs Carthage - posted by Paul Graham, 22 March 2026

Pictures from another 6 x 240pt game played at the Wellington Warlords on Saturday, six armies from the Punic Wars period scrapped it out on a 12 x 5 ft table with victory eventually going to the Carthaginian Alliance (of Carthaginians, naturally, Gauls and Spanish) who overcame the Roman Coalition (Romans, Numidians and Syracusans). A good time was had by all, players and numerous spectators alike.

The first contact, on the Roman Coalition right flank, Alastair Duncan's Numidians are forced to charge into Graham Starkey's Spanish scutarii and flaming wagons.

In the centre clash, thousands of Barry Norris' Gallic warband scream their way towards Consul Paul Goldstone's screen of Roman velites, standing in front of a rather worried line of legionaries.

Syracusan hoplites (Phil Gates) anchor the left of the Roman Coalition line, waiting for Raymond Pearce's Carthaginians. Their elephants and Hannibal too died in the face of uphill spears and artillery.

Great looking game, thank you for posting ðŸ˜Š
Of course the Carthaginians won. They win battle after battle. Each time the Romans go off round up more legions, appoint a couple more Consuls, hire more mercenaries, call up allies - and lose again. Until, one last battle, and the rest is history.
