Montefortino helmets - shared by John dods, 4 February 2024

Currently, more than 100 Montefortino type helmets are known archaeologically, but most of them are missing their cheekpieces. The helmet found in Crecchio, Italy, was the first to have not only cheekpieces, but even the head of the man who once wore it!
He was probably a Samnite warrior of the 4th century BC, and the rich burial site (numbering over 100 burials) has yielded a large number of other interesting finds which perhaps in a few cases demonstrate the evolution of the weaponry of the Italic tribes-for example, two short swords which may be interpreted as the forerunner of later Roman short swords, and spearheads which may be the precursors of the Roman Pilum javelin.
