News from WRG, naval, horse and musket and tank games - from David Mather, 28 November 2025

·
Hi – the other Weekend with WRG at Warfare
(He said alliteratively)
Some pics from Warfare the other weekend with WRG showcasing some sneak peaks at future publications.
I couldn’t really post too much in advance as I was co-running the 2 DBMM competitions and I didn’t know if I would be required to play. In the end both finished with even numbers so I could present some publications and games across the weekend
Firstly, the new branding beautifully illustrated by Peter Dennis of Paperboys fame was on display – I can only apologise for the
model.
On display was the final view of the pre publication version of the reformatted DBMM army lists –
First game run was a Naval game De Bellis Navium Ferrorum (DBNF) – This is a classic WRG style game that covers fleet actions 1896-1944. The game saw a small US fleet take on the Japanese. Pip dice for movement and other decision points. Opposed dice rolls to generate hits which are then converted into damage.
Next, we had a little version of To Sail the Spanish Main using the WoFun Spanish Armada ships – a game of piracy on the high seas using some rules that will be contained in a publication next year of after dinner games by Sue Laflin-Barker
Also on display was the new version of Horse Foot and Guns (Blenheim to Tannenberg) which it now looks like will not be available, sigh, until middle of next year as best guess. Warfare however saw an interesting experiment whereby I took the core rules of the new Horse Foot and Guns game and adapted to have a 12 element DBA style game. I used some of the Wofun WoSS figures posing as Swedes and Russian for a Great Northern War game first to kill 4 elements. The game lasted 42 minutes and the Swedes won 4-3.
I was quite pleased as to how easy it was to adapt. Although in fairness both forces were well balanced
Then we had a game currently titled the wee tankie game. This is very much an entry level game designed to encourage new players. 12 elements a side but at a high level so Heavy tanks, Medium tanks Recce, Infantry etc elements . Currently working using 1/300th scale. It is in its very early development. This should introduce players to the WRG core concepts – D6, Pips for movement and other things etc, Opposed dice combats again with D6 and various additional factors. Also, may encourage the old brigade to get those micros tanks back out from the back of the cupboard.
All these will hopefully be published next year – more details when I have them.
So, a very eventful weekend and an even more eventful 2026 is on the horizon.
Kind Regards

Update on DBMM army list reformatting - from David Mather, 27 November 2025

Time for an update on where we are with the Army List reformatting project
Firstly, let me thank you all on behalf of WRG and the reformatting team for your excellent feedback – both in terms of the books which have been on display at Britcon, Palma and Warfare and the response for the need for photographs to go in the books.
So, what happens next
Greg and I need to have a look at what pictures we still need – of which some more below and there will be a final detailed shout out for more piccies in a couple of weeks.
Once that is all done, and final drafts produced I will need to prostrate myself at Barker Towers with a proposal with how we go ahead – format, channel, pricing etc. Following the feedback I already have a good understanding of what I think is viable and fair (give this is a reformatting not a revision). Once that proposal is agreed I will communicate the confirmed publication details. Tentatively, we are aiming for a January release.
As regards more photographs – I would like to see some slightly different photos to reflect some other playing options – very specifically I am looking for pictures of either WoFun or Paperboys in action – if you don’t know what these are have a look here https://wofungames.com/ and here https://peterspaperboys.com/ .
These are great ways to start up in the hobby and have been invaluable for me in getting into the Horse, Foot and Gun era. Thus my own WoFun collection although vaster than SWMBO (S) would like (if she ever finds out) is focused purely on 1700 and later – I can probably get away with some of the Ghulams used for Panipat as Ghaznavids/Khurasanians or similar but really want to get some more WoFun figures in there along with their predecessor Paperboys. As ever if you have any photographs then please send them (or a link) to wrgimages@gmail.com
For those that haven’t seen them pictures of the pre pub drafts are attached – this includes the Compendium a weighty tome that proved very popular. I must admit I found it a boon during Warfare list checking.
More to follow when I have it.
Kind Regards
David Mather
