Call to Arms: my third and fourth games - posted by Vince Cholewa, 1 September 2025

[Edit after my post this morning: a correction, it turns out I didn’t win. There was a miscalculation of total scores and while mine was the top book 1 army, and most combative, I wasn’t first overall. The winner of the Brent Senior-Partridge trophy was Neil Williamson with Avars. Well done that man 😊]
Wellington Warlords’ held their annual Call to Arms at the weekend. Big thank yous to the club for running the convention, to Paul Graham for organising and umpirimg the DBMM competition, to my four opponents, to everyone who I had a chance to catch up with at the hall and at the pub and DBMM dinner on Saturday night - gentlemen all, and to Kapiti Hobbies for the prize voucher
😊
I used Mitanni, 1274 BC, an army refurbished from the estate of Brent Senior-Partridge. On Saturday I won my two games, while on Sunday I had a draw and a loss. Luckily, I scored enough points in total (mostly on Saturday) to win the DBMM competition. I was also the “most combative” player. This is based on game play (use of stratagems, flank marches, killing generals etc.) rather than personality 😝

Games are played used pre-set terrain inspired by historical battles and players move around the tables.

Round three, my Mitanni vs Peter Williamson’s Malay. Peter defended, chose the bottom edge of the map and I was able to move the gentle hill in Peter’s half of the table onto his base edge.

An intense moment (there were a few for both of us). When the game timed out finishing as a draw, we each had one broken command and one disheartened command, and had lost more than 30 percent of our armies’ morale equivalents. As it turned out my flank marching command would have been more useful on the table but it did eventually arrive.

Round four, my Mitanni vs Alastair Duncan’s Yi Dynasty Koreans. Alastair defended and I moved the large, scrubby hill back 80 paces to make a little more space for my chariots.

Alastair had the first move and pushed forward on his left. What this pic doesn’t show clearly is that the centre of Alastair’s army was a prodigious artillery line. As the game progressed I did not counter the artillery well and Alastair was able to advance it and break my CnC’s command without it ever getting into close combat! My left command did a good amount of damage but broke as the Korean infantry who had started behind the artillery line were able to eventually get into its flank. However, that was not before Alastair’s left had also broken taking Korean losses to more than 40 percent of morale equivalents (ME). Almost enough to burgle a win but not quite, as my losses topped 50 percent of ME and my army broke. An excellent game and good lessons learned about massed artillery and what not to do when confronted by it.

The Brent Senior-Partridge trophy, commemorating our dear friend, and medals for the win and most combative player. [Edit after my post this morning: a correction, it turns out I didn’t win. Rob Evans you know me Rob! It’s for how we play the game rather than having a pugnacious temperament! Things like use of stratagems, flank marches, killing generals etc.

Vincent Cholewa. I’m reading your attempts at shaping the dialogue as …… underhandedness, sucker punching and leadership decapitation….
….so all good then

Well done Sir!
So fitting that one of Brent's armies should win the trophy named in his honour!

James Davies thank you so much. The trophy is a lovely way to remember Brent and several of us has at least components of armies using figures from Brent’s estate.
