Josh's first game of DBMM? Posted by Josh Barton, 9 February 2019

Just a few photos from first game at the Hutt club - English 100 years war vs late Ptolemaic Egyptian. Thanks to Russell Briant for being a very fair and helpful opponent, pointing out a few mistakes and Gary Lewis for all of his advice!
A brief rundown of what happened (from an English point of view):
The Ptolemaic phalanx and Romans advanced rapidly up the field and were almost immediately in the English lines, with the longbows being surprisingly ineffective. However the English heavy foot counter-attacked and slowly cut into the phalanx, with the longbow also realizing they could support them from behind! The going was slow though and the Romans and Auxilia quickly broke the Nevilles on the English right.
With gaps opening in the English lines the companions charged forward... and stopped just in range of the longbows (Russell 1 for PIPs two turns running). This time the longbows showed their value, and killed two companions, whilst Henry Percy charged in and killed a third. The battered remnants of Neville's command refused to die, giving the Romans a draw after draw for several bounds.
Just as the English generals were tallying up how much more of a beating they could take with one shattered and one disheartened command, Ptolemy announced that the loss of the companions had shattered his second command, giving the English the tightest of victories!

Vincent Cholewa As someone far more literary than me once wrote, putting the words in the mouth of certain king:
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.”

Josh Barton It certainly felt that way! Russell got very unlucky in the last two turns, which saved me from being overrun by his cavalry reserves

Allen Yaxley Was it 400ap ?

  • Josh Barton Yep, all I've got so far :)
  • Allen Yaxley Josh Barton I think that it’s works will at 400ap.
  • Josh Barton Yeah seems to. I really was feeling a lack of light troops and reserves though ;)
  • Allen Yaxley Josh Barton the other guy will have the same issues. Terrain will be the great equaliser.🎲
  • Josh Barton Allen Yaxley definitely - Terrain was the one think I lacked which made it... interesting :p
  • Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton I really felt for you with the lack of terrain. Flanks are a killer for you late medieval types 😁
  • Josh Barton Dirk Heinsius yeah it prevented me from coming forward for sure. thankfully beginners' luck compensated for it
  • Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton - learning curve here. Russell had the initiative and could pick his attacks whilst you wete pinned because advancing would leave your flanks exposed. I had the same problem because of my unreliable ally.
  • Dirk Heinsius Fortunately for us both S grading and good dice at the right time means any attack can be withstood
  • Josh Barton Definitely! I'm keeping mixed commands while learning to avoid horrendous matchups (having seen how quickly some armies can move).
  • Dirk Heinsius Josh Barton - Russell is very good at that:-)
  • Josh Barton Haha yep I noticed that at valleycon :)
