A question about allies - asked by Adrian Phillips, 26 April 2024

Hi there if an army mentions Ally's but does not mention Ally Generals how do you cost out points?
1.I assume the troops you choose must be from the troop types in the Allied army list that are essential and not the optional ones.
2. What proportion do you take, assuming the same ratio?
3. What's the maximum you can take?
4. Do you also pay for an allied general where no allied general is mentioned in the Commanding Armies list or are they then part of his overall commands and allocated to one of his generals?
5. Do they retain their original grading or down graded?
6. Where do I find this in the rule book
Thanks 🙏

The general rules for allies are at the front of each of the army list books. Some lists have their own sublists which over-ride the general rules. In summary unless otherwise specified you have a general of a valid element type for the ally CinC or sub-general. You must have at least 1/4 minimum and not more than 1/3 maximum of each compulsory type (and only those types). This forms a separate command. If you have a specific list and potential ally, I'm sure someone can give more specific information.

As an example, the Numidian Ally for my later Carthaginians comes from list 2/40 and consists of 1 Irr LH(O) Ally general, 5 Irr LH(O), 4 Irr Ax(I) and 1 Bg(F). The minima would be 4 LH and 4 Ax. The maxima would be 17 LH and 22 Ax. The general could be Cv(O).

Ok .
First, thank you Barry.
As I understand you.
Some lists of Ally's if you choose an Ally you must include him/her/they/them in your points as represented in that list.
Question Are they reliable?
Then you purchase between 1/4 and 1/3 compulsory troop types.

Adrian Phillips on the are they reliable front, they get their own PIP dice. If the first roll is 1 they become unreliable and a number of unhelpful things happen.
From memory.…

I think you have it. The Ally forms part of the total AP. They are in their own command. Often they are chosen to allow a 4th command (with an extra PIP die) since most armies only allow 2 sub-generals. Reliability is explained in the rules pg 14.
