Three or four figures on infantry bases? Asked by Simon Dennan, 31 August 2025

A uneducated question. Are people still squeezing 4 inf figs on bases or is 3 permissible?

I have only started DBMM recently and nearly all the figures I have sourced are plastic. No way I can fit 4 to a base. Often it is a struggle to fit 3.

The rules say 3 - 4 so your choice. My Foundry Vikings are 3 to a base while the Aventine Spearmen are 4 to a base. If they are spear/pike in a standing pose then 4 looks great. Armies get finished earlier with 3 to a base.....

It depends. For 28mm infantry I try 4 to a base for regulars, 3 to a base for irregulars when the army I have has both troop types. My 28mm Foundry Spartan Hoplites fit 4 to a base. My 28mm Perry plastic War of the Roses blade fit 4 to a base. We have managed to fit 3 heavy 28mm mounted knights to a base, but you’d struggle to fit 4 28mm cataphracts to a base. I’ve seen old 1980’s 25mm cataphracts fit 4 to a base though. So - it depends…

28mm, esp the more exuberant poses of say Warlord, nicely fill the base with three. Their Macedonian pike will fit 4 but only just. I go with three.

John Way I guess that is the best way to think of it - filling the base. I know that there is talk the new victrix Knights have no chance of fitting 3 on a base - but no one is ever going to look at two of them on a bad e and say they must be LH…I hope. It was a huge struggle getting 3 Persian cav on a base, even then had to make the bases 60x50mm

I try to conform, but sometimes the figures just won't allow it. The main thing is to declare what everything is before you start the game, for absolute avoidance of doubt...

I’m thinking Sub-Roman. So maybe 4 per base for Legion types and 3 for pedyts? Seems to follow the rules guidelines and Al’s regular irregular demarcation.

At Call to Arms the DBMM competition is for the Brent Senior-Partridge Trophy. We use pre-set terrain inspired by historical battles. I am using Mitanni, 1274 BC. Yesterday, in the first two rounds my opponents were Richard Mason (Libyan Egyptian) and Richard Fields (Classical Indian). I was lucky enough to score two good wins. Rounds three and four today

The back story for my army.

My first game: I was the invader, Richard chose the bottom edge of the map, I was able to move the scrubby hill 80 paces and moved it towards Richard’s base edge to give my army a bit more open space.

My Mitanni vs Richard Mason’s Libyan Egyptians. At this stage the command on Richard’s right, mostly Libu Wb(F), has broken. The Pharaoh is bringing up the reserve and my flank march is about to arrive on my left. The reserve had to fight two of my commands, eventually breaking too and exposing the Meshwesh Wb(S) in the centre.

My second game, I was the invader, Richard chose the bottom edge of the map, I was able to move the wood on the right forward 80 paces to make a little more room behind it.

Early in my second game, showing the shape of the game that was going to unfold. Richard rolled abysmal PIP dice and his army struggled to respond to pressure on both flanks, with the flank commands eventually breaking.
