So a situation came up in a game yesterday which I wanted to seek some clarity on as it didn’t feel “right”.
Consultation of the rules suggested that we played it correctly but I wanted to check.
I have crudely drawn three pics to illustrate

My lone Ps was sitting near two enemy elephants.
The enemy brought up a Kn(X) which ZOCed my Ps
In my turn I was able to move the Ps in front of the two Elephants as I can move straight forward or straight back when ZOCed
This seemed strange
Am I right to think I couldn’t have moved in front of Elephants if I hadn’t been ZOCED?

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Peter Dunn yes. You played it correctly. When ZOCed you can move straight forward. I have posted a longer reply

And a bonus question
Could I make the Ps move if it would bring me into edge contact with the rear of an enemy Cv model

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Peter Dunn the Ps could move straight ahead to contact the Cv front edge or front corner only. So, no, you could not contact the Cv
- Peter DunnAuthorI’m sure it is all in the rule book but my Barkerese is rusty after 20 years and I thought I’d ask first1

- Peter S. TarasovPeter DunnWouldn't it be straight forward or straight back relative to the ZOC which is projected by the ZOC-cing unit, hence relative to the front of the ZOC-cing unit? What you have looks straight sideways!1

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Peter S. Tarasov this is a lawyer’s answer, it depends! (I am not a lawyer but I work with lawyers. Some of my best friends are lawyers!)The threat zone is defined in relation to the enemy’s front. The possible moves are defined in relation to your element’s front.1

- Peter S. TarasovVincent Cholewa right, and Figure 6.b would seem to confirm

Assuming good going I would think that a full tactical move would have taken you a bit further but still in the ZOC for the right hand element. Not sure about your second question but I think the Cv stops you making a full move so you are stuck. If the Cv was facing you you could contact (but not apparently into it's rear). And yes the ZOC rules seem weird.

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Barry Norris I think the best way to think of the ZOC rules is they are about responding to enemy who are facing you. In summary, the options are run away or move to a better place, face the threat, fight, or do nothing.Run away or move to a better place are not unlimited options because the enemy are too close and have to be responded to. However, moving straight ahead might be a “safer” option than going backwards. For example, you might be able to move into terrain or interpenetrate through friends. If choosing to fight, you can only fight enemy who are directly facing you. If there is more than one, you have some options about which is the best to fight.
- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Hi Pete it’s the fifth bullet point under threat zone on page 32. Yes, your psiloi could move straight forward. The Ps could move straight forward in three possible ways:1) a whole move without contacting enemy (if you like, running away or running into terrain).2) into contact with an enemy front edge or front corner only (there are enemy right in front and responding to them).3) directly towards the enemy exerting the TZ (again, there are enemy in front, gotta deal to them).1

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1The Ps cannot contact the Cv because it would not be contact on the front edge or front corner only.1

- Peter DunnAuthorYep...that's what I surmised too. In that case I could only move the Ps straightback or into contact with the Kn(X)?1

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Peter Dunn the other options were:1) Straight back to its own rear without contacting enemy (bullet point 7). This is the situation where running away to the rear is the better option.2) Turn to face the ZOC. That is, face the threat - bring it on!

Thanks for the replies.
And am I correct that the Ps can only move in front of the Elephants because the Kn(X) came up and created a ZOC?

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1Peter Dunn no. Even if you do not start in a ZOC, you can enter a ZOC and keep moving straight ahead. A possible rationale could be it prevents being cut off from a safer place. For example, not being cut off from terrain that you could reach or from a friend you could interpenetrate.

Follow up ZOC question. If a column of Ps moves into contact, am I right in thinking the first three elements in the column are all ZoCed

Since the Ps in ZoC are impetuous, what spontaneous options would it have had? The first elephant as that requires the smallest turn?

- Vincent CholewaAdminGroup Expert+1John Edmundson Ps are impetuous in the TZ of enemy foot. In this case all the enemy elements are mounted so the Ps would not be impetuous.

- John EdmundsonVincent Cholewa of course, I hadn't considered that the ZoCing element was mounted.
