Fun and Games at Heavy Metal Con - posted by Andrew Bennetts, 27 October 2025

The annual Heavy Metal Convention was held as usual in Pukekohe over Labour Weekend, celebrating all things 25mm+ and especially DBMM. However, given the increasing number of plastic and 3d printed resin figures on show we may need to revisit the name!
With 19 participants, including a raiding party of 6 who braved storm conditions to travel up from the south of the North Island, it was one of the better attended HMCs of recent years and the raucous noise levels suggested everyone had bought into the philosophy of non-competitive fun games.
But of course their were some prizes. In order of importance:
Best Looking Army:
There were a large number of very attractive armies on show but the popular choice was Gerard Lelieveld's Chinese (many 3d printed by Gerard as well as painted), with Ben Hill's Timurid's a very close second.
Best Sport:
While all games were played in a relaxed and friendly manner, the award for most genial, accommodating and entertaining opponent when to Philip Abela.
Most Successful Generals:
The draw for HMC is a curated draw based on challenges exchanged between players ahead of the event with remaining slots filled in by matching visitors with locals. In many cases, people used multiple armies across the weekend, with many historical (or at least plausible) matchups ensuing. So scores, while recorded, are just an indication of successes rather than true tournament standings.
Alastair Duncan (2nd) and Gary Lewis (3rd) took silverware home on behalf of the travelling contingent while (embarrassingly) yours truly found himself in nominal 1st place.
Other attendees (in no particular order) were:
Alastair Donald
Allen Yaxley
Ben Hill
Bryan Osbourne
Gerard Lilieveld
Grant Brown
Jame Davies (Sunday only)
John Calnan
John Way (Saturday only)
Mark Caunter
Nick Buckby
Paul Graham
Philip Abela
Phil Gates
Richard Foster

The Saturday night dinner at the local Turkish restaurant was well attended

Turks are famous for their treachery, feigned flights, flank attacks, sacking your camp, beware!

That’s a lot of kebab Ben!

Philip Abela's Philistines lock horns with Nick Buckby's Picts
Tilman Walk
How not to love history! Free Philistine!

Ben Hill's Early Carthaginians facing Wayne Watt's Early Hoplite Greek Thessalians.

Scholarly research by Ben Hill has revealed that Timur's expendables were actually escaped zoo animals!
Tilman Walk
Timuric propaganda obviously.

Swiss pikes from Wayne Watts Italian Condotta Milanese approach the Praetorians of James Davies Middle Imperial Roman.

Mark Caunter's Parthians launching an ill fated "six o'clock charge" on Grant Brown's Late Imperial Romans

Ben Hill's much admired Timurid's (his Hd(I) are as entertaining to view as his take on Expendables) in action against Phil Gates Feudal Spanish

The City of Pisa featured in this clash between Alastair Duncan's Communal Italians (complete with all manner of War Wagons) and Wayne Watt's Italian Condotta Milanese

Alastair Duncan's Korean turtle ships.......and a Trojan Rabbit?????

Nick Buckby's Picts assualt Bryan Osbourne's Classical Indians

Gerard's Chinese were the popular choice for best looking army
Tilman Walk
The Peoples popular Choice went Chinese. Surprise. Sure the CCP had no hand in it!

Another shot of Gerard's much admired Chinese, in this case facing Bryan Osbourne's Classical Indians

John Calnan's excellent Later Carthaginians in action against Gerard's Chinese

Nick Buckby's Pictish chariots also cut a dash.

Phil Gates Feudal Spanish were led by the corpse of El Cid propped up on a horse (look it up, it did happen!)
Tilman Walk
Not much has changed.... As usual, the British digested the idea best:

A truly weird game. John Calnan's Teutonic Knights occupied the centre of the table, orbited by Gary Lewis's French Ordonnance marching around the flank
Tilman Walk
Hover as a butterfly.... Papillon, bien sur, sting like that other insect. How did it end?

Ben Hill's much admired Timurids taking on Gary's very colourful French Ordonnance

John Way's Marian Romans about to be swarmed by Alastair Duncan's Samnites
