But…(from Wikipedia) The Phalanx CIWS (SEE-wiz) is an automated gun-based close-in weapon system to defend military watercraft automatically against incoming threats.

I am not sure this is quite right. Philip and Alexander had the Macedonian phalanx fair humming along and used displays of manoeuvre and speed for a bit of shock and awe. However, I would agree the phalanx was vulnerable to katyusha - possibly why they did not go far north into the steppes?
