ValleyCon DBMM 200 competition, Recoil! may games 4 and 5 - posted by Vince Cholewa, 28 April 2025

ValleyCon: Following my post yesterday about games 1-3 (link below) here are some pics and brief reports on games 4 and 5. I was using Mitanni and ended Recoil!, the DBMM 200 competition run most ably by Neil Williamson, with three wins on day one, and a loss and a draw on day two, 81/100 points and 1st!
vs Gary Lewis (Dublin Vikings). Gary defended, could not adjust the terrain and I used delayed battle to encourage my flank march on my right. My plan was to delay and fall back on my left, draw the Viking centre and their left forward from terrain and then hit that side with the flank march and a counter attack. Wooda, shoulda, coulda! I reckon my plan could have worked if my flank march arrived earlier than bound eight, just in time to watch the rest of my army breaking after a staunch resistance against just too many Vikings. Gary managed the game well and knew he had to press hard for the win, which he did, before my wayward wanderer arrived. 3-22
The result dropped me to second, Gary was now first and I would play third placed Richard Foster in the last round. The Vikings invaded Scotland (Alastair Duncan) and my Mitanni found a huge TARDIS and invaded Medieval Portugal almost 3,000 years in the future.
vs Medieval Portuguese (Richard Foster). Richard defended, could not adjust the terrain and, luckily for me, we played on very open terrain. I did not flank march and was able to use my command entirely of chariots (regular, superior cavalry) to delay the Portuguese knights on their right and the English ally in the centre. I massed the Hittites and my CnC’s command to attack the Portuguese exposed left.
It was a good plan (of course I’d say that 😝) but I made a bad tactical blunder that cost me one of the Hittite chariots and exposed their ally-general to be attacked front and flank. If he lost, then his command would break. He won 😮‍💨! However, the damage had been done and it was then a matter of when the Hitittes would eventually break. They lasted long enough and did enough damage that, with my CnC’s command, they broke the Portuguese left. The chariots on my left had done their job and redeployed to join my CnC. 13-12
Meanwhile, Laird Duncan’s Scots had seen off the Viking invasion and my 13 points was enough to jump me back up to first.
I had a great weekend with a gratefully received, good result. It was lovely to catch up with buddies, meet new people and talk and play toy soldiers. More than honourable mentions to our umpire, Neil, and my opponents: Alastair Duncan, Paul Graham, Richard Mason, Gary Lewis and Richard Foster 🙏🎲⚔️

The trophies most gratefully received. Henry VIII is passed on to each winner.

vs Gary Lewis, Vikings. Are we there yet? You can see the opportunity for my flank march and the problem with it not arriving until bound eight.

The terrain I played Gary on was not adjusted.

vs Richard Foster, Medieval Portuguese. Getting serious! Neil Williamson, the umpire is in the striped shirt, and Gary Lewis (first or second place depending on the result of this game) is in the cap. Here, the chariots from my left have left the irregular Portuguese knights well-behind and out of the fight. My Hittites in the centre and the Portuguese left are both about to break.

The terrain Richard and I played on. It was definitely to my advantage.
