What was the first wargaming book you read? The first wargaming book I ever read was “Charge! Or how to play war games”. As it was about 1973 when I borrowed it from the Brooklyn library in Wellington it was obviously not DBMM!
This is a modern, digital reprint my wife found for me. I am looking forward to reading it again 😊
I found one of the original hardcover versions on EBay for $US85 plus postage. Too much for a trip down nostalgia lane.

Kevin McCarthy Donald Featherstones Wargames about 1972 soft cover. Got a thrashing!
Roly Hermans 'Charge!' was my first book too. I still view those figures as the ultimate wargame. I am trying to recreate the feel in my Barryat of Lyndonia project.
Ion A Dowman My first book as well. Unfortunately, the dust cover disintegrated years ago. The first book I READ was one of Don Featherstone's titles. I now have a copy of his first book, plus a couple of others.

Vincent Cholewa Ion A Dowman and Adrian Phillips the Brooklyn library had quite a range of Donald Featherstone’s books and I read those, too. Likewise, I have bought several of them over time as I collect classic wargaming books 📚

Ion A Dowman Vincent Cholewa I'll see what I can come up with. It was years ago I downloaded it.
I discover I misspoke, however. It was not 'Harper's' magazine, but 'Scribner's'. I always misremember that. Here's a link to the whole issue. The S at Play article runs through pp71-81.…See More
Ion A Dowman If this doesn't work, try this Google search:
Lloyd Osbourne, 'Stevenson at Play' Scribner's magazine 1898.
You could add v24 no6 to narrow your search, but you'll get good hits without.
