The Byzantines had a beacon system that stretched across Anatolia to Constantinople. Its purpose was to warn the Emperor of an incoming invasion or raid by the Abbasid Caliphate. Huge pyres were lit on fire, one after the other, until the signal reached the capital. This is is the inspiration for the lighting of the beacons of Gondor scene in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
