ValleyCon DBMM 200 competition, Recoil! - My first three games, posted by Vince Cholewa, 27 April 2025

Thank you so much to the Hutt Valley Wargaming Club who are running their annual ValleyCon and for the cool commemorative mugs - a lovely keepsake.
Also a big thank you to Neil Williamson for running the DBMM 200 competition, Recoil! We are using preset terrain: the defender chooses sides and, depending on the dice may be able to adjust the terrain. Yesterday we played three games in two groups: books 1 and 2, and books 3 and 4. Today the groups cross over based on the points scored yesterday and we play two games.
I am using Mitanni and my three games yesterday were:
vs Alastair Duncan, Gauls. I invaded and Alastair could not adjust the terrain. I attacked on my left and used delayed battle to encourage my flank march also on that side. I held back on my right. My flank march arrived into a cunning ambush and broke! Fortunately, it was able to break the ambushing command and draw away the Gallic cavalry. That meant my attack was able to turn the right flank of the huge block of warband. 17-8.
vs Paul Graham, Alans. Again I invaded and Paul could not adjust the terrain. I flank marched with delayed battle on my right and did what I could to delay and breakup the plentiful Alan superior light horse on this flank, buying time for the flank march to arrive. I held back on my left. Unlucky PIP dice for the Alans led to my refused left becoming a bit of a killing zone and prevented the Alans responding effectively to my flank march. 23-2.
vs Richard Mason, New Kingdom Egyptians. This time I defended and was able to move a terrrain feature. I moved a BUA from the middle of the table to my left corner to open up the playing area. Subtlety be f-ed! My cunning plan was to bash into the middle of the Egyptians with my Hittite chariots (ordinary knights) supported by elements from the Mitanni commands to their left and right. It worked and they broke through the centre. 25-0.

My opponents were gentlemen all and it was a pleasure to play them.

Mitanni vs Alastair Duncan (Gauls). My flank march has arrived and is about to be ambushed for its troubles! Luckily, it drew away the Gallic reserve and by a small miracle broke the ambushing command. You can see the right of the huge block of warband becoming exposed.

The Gallic baggage, of course

Magnificent

The terrain we used. Alastair defended and his dice were not sufficient to allow him to alter the terrain.

Mitanni vs Paul Graham (Alans). My flank March has not yet arrived on my right and I am doing what I can to buy time on that side of the table. I have pushed a pair of “march blockers” forward on my left.

The terrain we used. Paul defended and his dice were not sufficient to allow him to alter the terrain.

Mitanni vs Richard Mason (New Kingdom Egyptians). There is a messy fight in the middle but the Egyptian centre is starting to break up. There had been a BUA at the cross roads but I was able to move it before we deployed so I could open up the table.

I defended and my dice were sufficient to allow me to move the BUA from the crossroads to the bottom left, next to the sea where it would have no effect on the game. Being able to open up the table was decisive for me.
