John McLennan Is there another hall in use as well - or are numbers down again?
- John McLennan Dang. The "Nationals" really do seem to have lost their relevance then. That is somewhat sad, although perhaps an indicator that the way we game has changed.
- John McLennan I agree. It wasn't when we were younger of course, but the "younger" gamers today seem to run at a much lower level of enthusiasm. Yet strangely the industry has never looked so good and manufacturers tell us they are busier than ever. I know that my i…See More
- Vincent Cholewa John McLennan DBMM is a three day comp. Several people, including me, played either one day or two. We are getting good entries for two day competitions run over two Saturdays.
- John McLennan Is it simply that the Nationals have lost their relevance for most people? I feel that nailing it to a single location with a proven history of putting on a good weekend would go a long way to increasing numbers. A good venue/city would enable future planning for all, allowing other family members to do "holiday stuff" whilst the gamer gets their fix. In Australia, the Canberra weekend is well attended and even gamers from Perth (and NZ) go every year, often taking families with them. Individual competition organisers do a great job, but the overall size of the Nats is clearly beginning to fall below sustainable (or even botherable) levels.
- Rob Shirley 112 entries. Lots of different games systems equals fewer players in each. I've only been playing 25 years, unlike a number of the more experienced players at this NatCon, but numbers are dribbling down. The number of events that are happening is certainly increasing, primarily in the single game system situation.
- John McLennan It is difficult to know how to solve the issue - or indeed if it can be or even should be. Many other events are also set up over easter weekend diluting the pool. Part of the problem over the years is that our hobby is emotional and so things are ofte…See More
- John McLennan Not at this stage Russell. If DBMM was offered at 240 points I would go for that. Unfortunately the current trend is ever upwards on points (now up to 450) and tables that get larger and larger. 240 allows 3 games a day, over three days. 9 games total.…See More
- Russell Briant John McLennan. NatCon (NZ edition) was 400 points. There was the option to play 450 if mutually acceptable but I didn’t hear of any take ups.
Neil Williamson shortly running a 200 point tournament over two weekends for some quicker games so I’ll see how that plays.
You may well have a point. - John McLennan The larger games look great - but 6 or so over a weekend is exhausting. One of the things I find about DBMM is that a large game feels very much like a law exam (I have sat a few in my time) and the games are extremely tiring - albeit rewarding. 200 or 240 give quicker games that allow the player to enjoy the DBMM experience without the thousands of references to factors, advantage and all of the other nuances of the game. It is a good game - but an extremely intense one. I have found 240 points a little better than 200 as it gives a few more options and allows more armies to play - as at smaller sizes some are very uncompetitive.
