Thracians on the painting table - posted by Vince Cholewa, 30 March 2020

Thracian light horse assembled and undercoated. They are a mixture of figures from my spares box, some of which appear to be home-cast but I don’t know by who. They are part of decades of accumulating figures, “leftovers” from completed armies, and unused bits and pieces from job lots bought at conventions . They will be the last four elements I need to replace an under-performing command of 11 horse archers, LH(F), with javelin-armed LH(O).
As an aside, Christopher Webber’s “The gods of battle” is an excellent reference. It brings together recent archaeology - including his work - and research (western and, importantly, also Bulgarian and Russian). It is not what I would call reading for the pleasure of language but is probably the definitive source on Thracian warfare.

Denis Grey I am re-reading the Osprey at the moment. Is there much overlap between the two?

  • Vincent Cholewa Denis Grey they are consistent with each other. The Osprey has more colour illustrations while The Gods of Battle covers a longer period in much more detail.

  • Denis Grey It's the illustrations I need - for the army I've just bought (to use in a DBA competition which has since been cancelled).

  • Vincent Cholewa Denis Grey I can understand what you might be feeling. Here in NZ all wargaming conventions and club meetings have been cancelled, too.
  • Denis Grey I'll get over it - and it means i can just carry on with my LIR.

  • Denis Grey Thanks. It's in his Osprey book too, but only in black and white.
