DBMM at Auckland Wargames Club (AWC) - posted by Andrew Bennetts, 18 January 2026

Julius Caesar's (aka John Way) most recent attempt to invade Gaul was today rebuffed by my band of Gallic heroes (with assistance from some Iberian Spanish allies).
The Iberians were initially defending a fortified village on the right, with the Gauls coming to their aid against the Roman imperialists. While initially unsure of Gallic intentions (i.e. they were unreliable!) the Iberians eventually piled out of their fortifications and turned the Roman left as the Gauls assaulted frontally, leading to the Romans on this flank breaking after a hard fight.
On the rest of the battlefield, Gallic Cavalry and chariots prevented Caesar and his elite Xth legion getting into action and so we called it a 15-10 to the Gauls and their friends.

Great game against a fun opponent

The Iberians defending their village

The Gallic relief force

The Roman array with carefully separated lines

A battle of maneuver on the Gallic left as cavalry look to interpose themselves between the Foot Warriors (Wb(O)) and the fearsome Xth Legion (plus supports)

As the Gauls move past the village, the Iberians begin to emerge to threaten the Roman left

The outnumbered first line of (expendable!) Roman auxiliaries tries to face the Gallic horde

The stalemate on the Gallic left is now established.

Iberians steadily overcoming the Roman left

With the Romans securely holding the difficult hill on their right, the Gallic advance here is halted awaiting developments on the other flank

The Roman left is overrun and breaks before the last line of legionaries can be committed.

Alastair Duncan it was you who, many moons ago, introduced me to the chaos of the garrisoned BUAf

By Toutatis! Many thanks for posting. It’s always interesting to see different situations playing out - a village of indomitable Iberians.
