The Return: A four star review as Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes smash it in a not family-friendly telling of the final chapters of the Odyssey.
Here, Odysseus and Penelope are not to be outdone by the prequel to their story, they get to ask some hard questions.
Depending on the translation you read, the Iliad, opens with versions of:
Black and murderous, that cost the Greeks
Incalculable pain, pitched countless souls
Of heroes into Hades' dark,
And left their bodies to rot as feasts
For dogs and birds, as Zeus' will was done.”
In this movie, Odysseus continues the theme as he returns home, shipwrecked and virtually a tramp: “What will the people say when they see I have returned alone, that I led all their men to their deaths?”
And Penelope: “Why do men go to war? Why do they murder women and children?”
