Ptolemaic vs Japanese - Russell Briant posted on 25 October 2018

Great game today against Peter Noble ‘s Japanese who saw off the invasion of Ptolemy - decisively!
The Imitation Legionnaires got their second run, this time painted.
Some photos of trying to roll up both wings.

Allen Yaxley Nice looking game.

Ptolemaic imitation legionaries - Russell Briant posted on 26 October 2018

Finished painting my Imitation Legionnaires in time to face Peter Noble on Saturday.
These are Warlord Games plastic Caesarean Roman Legionnaires with Victrix Macedonian cavalry heads.
I’m very happy with the combination.
Have based them on 30mm deep bases so they have an alternative use as Thorakitae.

Dirk Heinsius Very nice
Che Tibby nice - tbh i think all heavy foot should be on bigger bases. the rules haven't kept pace with size creep. my Etruscans are a nightmare of ill-fitting figures.
Vincent Cholewa The mercenary hoplite ally command in my Thracian army are all three to a base. I have left them 20mm deep but 30mm would work better.
Che Tibby i can squeeze them on sideways easily enough, it's the extended shields and spears that's an issue :/
Vincent Cholewa Che Tibby I made the mistake when I first painted my Seleucids of having the piles lowered in a fighting position. Absolutely hopeless trying to line up rear ranks and close with enemy. I ended up converting them all to pikes raised and then had to repaint them.

Heavy Metgal Con - Richard Foster posted on October 25

Greetings everyone,
Over Labour weekend we had our annual 25mm Ancients DBMM convention. We had 17 gamers show up from as far south as Wellington and as far north as Takapuna.
As it is a non-competitive outing with real blokes we allowed participants to try out several different armies.
The results are;
Benny using Sea Peoples…67
John Calnan with various knight armies ….63
Grant Brown with Lybians and Gypos…..62
Philip Abela with E.I.Romans ……62
Me with Middle Assyrians and Patsies….57
Ben V with Crusaders and Vikings…………..51
Rob Sadler manhandling Medieval Portuguese…..42
Paul Graham suffered with Palmyrans and Parthians….38
Allen Yaxley using Biyuds…….37
Mike Hodgsons tried E.I.Romans 101….36
Gary did not glitter with the Cypriots…..21
Others did not play all rounds but here is some interesting reading;
Barrel rolled out the Picts……56
John Way persisted with his Marian Romans….44
Gerard L used Late Hungarians….38
Al Donald used Spartans and Wars of the Roses English …..30
Ivan accommodated with Early Germans…..13
And lastly Mark appeared with some Carthaginians…7
The Best sport went to Al Donald for persevering despite his injuries and unsolicited advice
The Best painted army eventually went to Rob and his Portuguese although there were several other fine armies especially mine!
All up jolly good fun with an excellent curry on Saturday night.
That’s it.
Uncle Dickie

Vincent Cholewa
Good show chaps. Pip pip and all that 😊
John Way Was much fun hanging with my fellow pale stale males. My two wins were as much a surprise to me as to my opponents! Staying for the second day would be pushing my luck... thanks organisey folks

Philip Gates 10 and 24 November
Che Tibby cheers
Vincent Cholewa See you there. I am bringing Seleucids - the early part of the list when the line cavalry are Cv(O).

Che Tibby
here's hoping for a civil war.
Rob Shirley Ahh Che Tibby, I suspect you are at work as I sent this to you as the first attachment on Tuesday. Naughty, naughty, or are you self-employed or retired these days? 😉😉😉
Che Tibby rob, apologies but i have no idea what you're meaning.
Rob Shirley Hi Che, I have you as one of the receivers of the monthly NZ email newsletter. You have been there for years. I suspect you are not at orcon anymore.

Looking for a game: Allen Yaxley posted on 24 October 2018

Neil and Hun army looking for a game at Hutt Club on Saturday?
Any one interested let me or him know.

Dirk Heinsius I’m happy to fight the Hun
Kevin McCarthy Will there be sun?
Allen Yaxley Hard battle for the Hun. Stratagems will be a happening. 🎲🎲🎲
Dirk Heinsius Allen Yaxley I'm Roman not Byzantine!
Allen Yaxley your point is ?🤪
Dirk Heinsius Allen Yaxley - A true Roman doesn't need to resort to stratagems
Allen Yaxley That explains the limit of the empire.😱
Vincent Cholewa There will be roads, all of which will lead to ...
Russell Briant The Colossus of roads?

Dirk Heinsius Alas the Huns rolled over my auxilia
Allen Yaxley Did the Huns win decisively or just against the auxiliary troops ?
Dirk Heinsius Allen Yaxley 23-2 The auxilleries collapsed and the 2ME transfer broke the German ally and that was half the army
Allen Yaxley Sounds like a good game. The Roman armies did will at Pukekohe against my Buyids.
Did the Huns take prisoners?😍

Neil Williamson My stratagem was to roll 4 6s for my PIP dice and never to roll a 1 for my clumsy knights
Dirk Heinsius Conversely my stratagem was to throw good PIP dice but lots of 1s and 2s for combat

Great weekend with heavy metal con. Benny was victorious.

Andrew Bennetts commented: Not my finest hour. Game 1 vs Nick timed out with both armies 40% down and Nick within striking distance of my baggage which would have tipped the scales. Meanwhile Grant Brown had me on the ropes Game 4, the sheer staying power of Sea Peoples being all that kept me afloat. Game 3, Paul Graham had the misfortune of his army breaking bound 8 due to an Allied flank march not arriving! A gong's a gong but not a lot of bragging rights this time! Benny

Sea People on the left

Buyids of Fars

This was later Hungarian against Italian Condotta. Hungarian Knight s and knight wedges did the damage against knight (O)

This was Persian verses Palmyran I believe.

Finished off a couple of Aventine figure sets that have been in a semi-completed state for a while.
A Ptolemy the somethink with Gallic guards and a Julius Caesar type with lictors.
The former gives me a C-in-C dismounted swap out to Pk (S) option and the latter a leader for a future Marian/Early Imperial Roman force someday.
